Hancock County occupies the southwestern corner of Mississippi's Gulf Coast, bordered by Louisiana to the west and the Gulf of Mexico to the south. The county seat is Bay St. Louis, a charming coastal town known for its arts community, historic downtown, and waterfront living. Waveland and the surrounding communities make up the rest of the county's populated areas.
Beyond the coastal towns, Hancock County extends north into vast pine forests and swampland, much of it associated with NASA's Stennis Space Center — one of the largest employers in the region. The county offers a striking contrast: beachfront living in Bay St. Louis, rural pine land in the interior, and bayou-lined wetlands throughout. Hurricane Katrina devastated the coast in 2005, and the rebuilding has reshaped the community and property values significantly.
