Choctaw County is one of Mississippi's most rural and least developed counties, situated in the central-east part of the state. The county seat is Ackerman, a small town along Highway 12. The landscape is dominated by the hills and forests of the upper Tombigbee drainage, with portions of the Tombigbee National Forest extending into the county.
This is deep-country Mississippi. The population is small, the forests are thick, and the pace of life is slow. For buyers seeking cheap, wooded acreage for hunting, timber, or off-grid living, Choctaw County is one of the best values in the state. It's remote enough to feel like genuine wilderness while still being within an hour of Starkville and Mississippi State University.
