Perry County is a small, heavily forested Piney Woods county in south Mississippi, with New Augusta as its county seat. The county is home to a significant portion of Camp Shelby Joint Forces Training Center, one of the largest military training installations in the country. The remaining landscape is dominated by pine forests, with the Leaf River flowing along the county's northern boundary.
Perry County is deeply rural and sparsely populated. New Augusta is a tiny community with minimal services — Hattiesburg, about 30 minutes north, fills most needs. The combination of Camp Shelby's buffer zone and the county's natural forest cover creates an unusually remote feel for south Mississippi. For land buyers, Perry County offers some of the cheapest pine-belt acreage available, with Leaf River recreation as a bonus.
